Abstract: Coffee is one of the most important non-alcoholic beverages of the world. Coffee is the world’s second largest traded commodity after petroleum and its products. The main objectives of the study are to analyze the procurement management, processing methods and processing cost and marketing management followed by coffee processing units. The study was conducted in Chikamagalur, Moodigere, Tarikere, Koppa, Sringeri and NR pura taluks of Chikamagulur district of Karnataka. The primary data was collected from 32 coffee processing units from three categories of small, medium and large processing units based on their installed capacities. The data was subjected to tabular analysis, descriptive statistics and profitability analysis. The coffee processing units procured coffee through two channels viz., directly from planters and from the commission agents. The processing units procured more than 60 per cent of the coffee through commission agents. The procurement of coffee was maximum in the months of November to March as it coincided with the peak harvesting season of coffee. The average cost of carrying inventory per tonne was found to be Rs. 3570. The average variable cost incurred in processing of one tonne of coffee was found to be Rs. 1, 22,154, out of which the cost of raw material was found to be the highest. The coffee processing units followed two channels for marketing of the processed coffee beans viz., Channel I: Processor – Wholesaler – Consumer and Channel II: Processor – Agent – Distributor – Exporter. On an average 60.25 per cent of coffee was marketed through Channel II.
