Title: MARKER ASSISTED SELECTION FOR WATER AND NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract: The emphasis on increasing rice grain yield of irrigated lowland rice when water and N are amply supplied will gradually diminish in importance as concerns mount about reduced water availability for irrigated rice and the environmental impact from N losses. The new challenge is to sustain the needed increase in rice yields while reducing the requirements for water and N per unit of grain production. The present investigations were carried out to map markers for Water Use Efficiency and Nitrogen Use Efficiency and also for some morphological, physiological and productivity traits, to identify the consensus QTLs for yield and related traits in mapping population consisting of 188 RILs obtained from Swarna and WAB450. The study was undertaken with 188 Recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs) derived from the cross between Swarna x WAB450 along with checks which were phenotyped and 60 genotypes along with checks were selected based on mean data of grain yield and their attributing traits. These selected RILs along with checks were phenotyped for various root traits, Water Use Efficiency (Δ13), Leaf N content, Grain N content and Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) and genotyped using 88 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers. The genotypes SW-L38 and SW-L130 ranked top for WUE while, the check WAB450, ranked first for root length, root volume and shoot weight (fresh). It was interesting to note that, the top best genotypes like, SW-L30, SW-L43, SW-L156, SW-L163 and Mysore mallige showing superiority for NTE were also exhibited superiority with respect to NUE. The genotype SW-30 might be important due to higher grain yield coupled with higher NUE and Ratansagar, a local land race from Bidar, can be considered due to its superiority for grain nitrogen content and many NUE related traits. New and useful variation were created for WUE, NUE traits and also morphological, physiological and yield traits in the investigation. The SSR markers RM518 and RM225 are found to be associated with Water Use Efficiency and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in F2 mapping population of BPT5204 x WAB450 and BPT5204 x Mysore Mallige useful for MAS. Research on genetic improvement of rice varieties for high WUE and NUE should receive more attention in the near future.
