|Abstract:||Foremilk samples of 200 quarters from 50 apparently healthy cows of different parity were collected and subjected to cultural examination, Somatic cell count (SCC), Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Modified California Mastitis Test (MCMT), to find out prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis. Samples were also examined for changes in composition viz. fat, protein and lactose of sub-clinical mastitic milk as compare to normal milk. Antibiotic sensitivity of the bacterial isolates was also determined. The prevalence of sub-clinical mastitis based on cultural examination was 37.50 per cent (75/200) on quarter basis and 56.00 per cent on cow basis. Out of 200 quarter milk samples 87 samples (43.50 per cent) showed total somatic cell count greater than 0.5 million/ml, 76 samples (38.00 per cent) showed electrical conductivity more than 6 ms/cm and 59 samples were found to be Modified California mastitis test positive. The average fat, protein and lactose exhibit slight variations between normal and sub-clinical mastitis positive animals. The average mean value of fat, protein and lactose per cent were 4.2 ± 0.031, 3.43 ± 0.017 and 5.11 ± 0.010 in normal milk and 3.89 ± 0.038, 3.20 ± 0.024 and 4.756 ± 0.029, respectively in sub-clinical mastitic milk of cows. In sub-clinical mastitic milk, Staphylococcus aureus was the most prevalent organism (52.68 per cent), followed by Streptococcus dysaglactiae (19.35 per cent), Bacillus cereus (11.82 per cent), E. coli (9.67 per cent), Streptococcus aglactiae (4.30 per cent) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (2.15 per cent). The drug sensitivity showed that the organisms were highest susceptible to ceftriaxone + tazobactum, ampicillin + sulbactum, cefuroxime and cefoperazine.|
