Abstract: The present study was conducted on 40 pairs (20 pairs were collected during the summer and 20 pairs during winter) of thyroid gland of freshly slaughtered male goats between 8 months to 16 months from the municipal slaughterhouse of Bikaner. Then 16 pairs of thyroid glands of summer and 16 pairs of the thyroid glands of winter were used for light microscopic studies. Grossly, the thyroid glands of the goats were bi-lobed, almond shaped dark reddish brown and connected to each other at their posterior end by a thin filament isthmus. The right lobe was slightly elongated. Usually they were located between 3rd to 6th tracheal rings. The isthmus was absent in three goats out of forty goats in the present study. Light microscopically, the thyroid gland was covered by a three-layered capsule. The epithelium and follicular colloid varied according to the functional phase of the gland. Flat dark nuclei of myoepithelial cells were seen around the thyroid follicles. The follicles were classified in accordance to the diameter of their follicular colloids in three sizes: small, medium and large. The gland showed predominance of collagen fibres in capsule and trabeculae and reticular fibres in inter-follicular connective tissue. The parafollicular cells in 109 the parenchyma of thyroid gland were ovoid in shape, large sized with palestaining cytoplasm. The thyroid glands were positive for glycogen. Calcium and iron depositions were observed in epithelium of follicles, colloid and parafollicular cells, but the calcium particles were absent in the capsule and the trabeculae but iron was present. There was no significant seasonal variation in length, width, thickness, weight and volume. Effect of season on colloids of all sized follicles had no significant changes. In one specimen, thyroidal colloids with follicular epithelium and parafollicular cells in the capsule and in one specimen, a very small thyroid lobe within the capsule of thyroid was visible. A very small capsulated parathyroid gland (surrounded by thyroid follicles) was also found in one of the specimens. In scanning electron microscopic studies, the size of the thyroid follicles ranged between 20-90 µm.
