|Title:||FRUIT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT STUDIES IN DIFFERENT AONLA (Emblica officinalis Gaertn) CULTIVARS|

|Abstract:||A study was undertaken jpciardinif growth and development of aonia (Emblica officinalis Gaertn) fruit at the Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth. Rahuri, during 1995. The morphological and physico-chemical changes in the fruits of four cultivars viz., Kanchan.Krishna, Chakaiya and Francis were studied at certain intervals from full anthesis (March, 1995) to 260 days growth (November. 1995). Dark green, tiny fruits became visible and attained measurable size after 135 days of fertilization. The physical parameters such as weight, volume, length, diameter, pulp percentage, stone percentage, juice percentage and biochemical parameters such as TSS, acidity, sugars, ascorbic acid and tannine were studied. The fruit growth in respect of weight, volume, length, diameter and pulp weight showed a double sigmoid growth curve. The growth period of fruit could be broadly divided into three distinct phases. There were two periods of active growth rate i.e. phase I (0.411 g/day) and phase ITT (0. 316 g/clay) separated by a period of slow growth rate, phase II (0.290 g/day) as lag phase. The fruit length to diameter ratio decreased upto 235 days and afterwards increased slightly and remained more or less constant till 260th days. The ratio was less than one throughout the course of fruit development. The specific gravity of fruit increased gradually upto 210 days and thereafter it decreased as the growth period advanced. The shape of fruit changed from round. ova) and oval round to oblong, flattened oblong/round and broadly flattened round at harvest maturity. The fruit colour changed from dark green, light green, creamish green to creamish yellow/apricot ye]low at harvest maturity. The colour of seed changed from creamy white to light brown/dark brown during the subsequent stages of fruit, development . The pulp weight continued to increase with advancement of maturity. However, increase was slow during phase II (0.263 g/day) followed by a rapid increase during phase III (0.306 g/day). The pulp per cent increased during phase I of rapid fruit growth, followed by a decline during phase II and continued to increase again with advancement of maturity in phase III. The stone weight increased continuously but rapid increase (0.0280 g/day) was observed during phase II than phase I (0.0230 g/day) and phase III (0.0100 g/day). The pulp : stone ratio increased continuously upto 210 days and thereafter it decreased suddenly, which again increased steadily upto 260th day of fruit development. The juice percentage on pulp weight basis and fruit weight basis increased continuously while the dry matter content of pulp decreased with the advancement in the age of fruit. The TSS showed an increasing trend with advancement of fruit maturity. The aodif.y increased upto 235 days and afterwards declined slightly upto 260 days stage. The TSS : acid ratio decreased continuously upto 235.days and thereafter it increased upto 260 days stage. The total and reducing sugars content increased upto 245 days stage and thereafter decreased slightly, while the non-reducing sugars decreased upto 245 days and increased slightly at later stages of maturity. The ascorbic acid content showed an increasing trend with fruit development upto 253 days stage and afterwards a negligible decline was observed at 260 days stage of fruit development. The tannin content of pulp declined throughout the period of fruit development. After considering the physico-chemical parameters, it can be concluded that, aonla fruits of cvs. Krishna and Chakaiya may be harvested between 245 to 253 days and cvs. Kanchan and Francis between 253 to 260 days after anthesis under Rahuri conditions.|
