Title: LINE x TESTER ANALYSIS OF BRINJ5L (Solanum melongena, L.) WITH EMPHASIS ON WILT RESISTANCE AND ECONOMIC CHARACTERS

Abstract: The heterotic effects over MP and BP were observed for almost all the characters. The percentage of heterosis over MP in positive and desirable direction was maximum in AK x LB (90.57 %) for number of fruits per cluster followed by AK x D (81.35 %) for yield per plant, PBR-91-2 (54.21 %) for number of primary branches, KL x D (51.99 %) for average weight of fruit, PBR-7 x D (53.73 %) for number of fruits per plant, S-3 x LB (34.28 %) for seedling height at planting, AK x D (32.72 %) for final height, PBR-91-2 x D (29.07 %) for number of secondary branches, PBR-7 x D (27.18 %) for diameter of fruit, MG x LB (22.56 %) for spread of the plant, AK x LB (16.83 %) for length of fruit. The highest heterosis In negative and desirable direction was observed for percentage of wilted plants in MG x LB (-100 %) and AK x LB (-100 %) followed by days to 50 per cent flowering in S-3 x LB (-22.87%) and days to picking in MG x LB (-16.09 %). he combining ability analysis revealed the predominant role of non-additive gene action for seedling height at planting, final height, number of primary and secondary branches, spread of the plant, days for 50 per cent flowering and picking, number of fruits per plant, average weight of fruit, length of fruit, diameter of fruit and percentage of wilted plants, while additive gene action was observed for number of fruitsper cluster and yield per plant. The line AK for the characters plant height, number of fruits per plant and cluster, length of fruit and percentage of wilted plants was found to be the good general combiner. Similarly, BG for days to 50 per cent flowering and picking, KL for the yield per plant and weight of the fruit, S-3 for seedling height at planting, MG for the spread of the plant and percentage of wilted plants, PBR-7 for number of primary branches and PBR-91-2 for secondary branches were found to be the good general combiners. The tester Local Brinjal for seedling height at planting, spread of the plant, average weight of fruit, number of primary and secondary branches, length of fruit, diameter of fruit and percentage of wilted plants; while Dorli for final height, days for 50 per cent flowering and number of fruits per plant were good general combiners. The hybrid MG x LB for number of primary branches, spread of the plant, days for 50 per cent picking and yield per plant, AK x LB for number of fruits per cluster and length of fruit; KL x D for average weight of fruit and diameter of fruit; MG x D for seedling height at planting; S-3 x D for final height and PBR-7 x D for numbex of fruits per plant had the highest s.c.a. effects. In general, it was observed that the heterosis breeding for important economic traits like yield, its components and wilt resistance has good prospective in brinjal. Besides, promising genotypes were isolated which could be considered for testing in further breeding programme. The crosses MG x LB was the most promising followed by AK x LB.
