|Abstract:||The present studies on floral biology and related aspects of five aonla cultivars viz., Chakaiya, Francis, Kanchan, Krishna and Neelum were carried out at the Germplasm Block of All India Coordinated Research Project on Arid Zone Fruits, M.P.K.V., Rahuri during the flowering season of year 1998-99. The study revealed that under semi-arid conditions of Rahuri, aonla tree begins to shed its determinate shoots from December onwards resulting the indeterminate shoots devoid of foliage by the end of December to mid-January. The new determinate shoots which emerge at nodes from the margin of scars formed after abscission of determinate shoots in the previous season, begin to appear by the middle of January and continue to appear till the second week of February. Blossom buds appear on the newly developed determinate shoots. Inflorescence was racemose type, flowers were minute, unisexual with short pedicel. Male flowers appeared first in clusters. They had membranous perianth segments, yellowish green to deep pink in colour with velvet aestivation and anandroecium with three connate anthers. Male flowers were invariably situated at the lower end of the branchlets. The pink colour of male flowers faded away and they turned creamy white as they grew old. Female flowers were intermingled with male flowers at the upper end of the branchlets . They had six tiny green perianth segments. Male flower bud development period was maximum in cultivar Krishna (16.65 days) and minimum in cultivar Neelum (13.43 days) while, female flower bud development period was maximum in cultivar Neelum (21.43 days) and minimum in cultivar Krishna (18.44 days). The flower opening commenced from the first week of February and ended by second fortnight at March. The flowering duration varied from 30 days (cv. Krishna) to 43 days (cv. Chakaiya) in different aonla cultivars. In aonla, great preponderance of male flowers was observed and the sex-ratio (male : female) varied from 11.53 : 1 (cv. Chakaiya) to 22.90 :1 (cv. Krishna). Peak anthesis of male flowers was observed during 6.00 to 7.00 p.m. and the anther dehiscence coincided with anthesis. The peak anthesis of female flower was noticed between 12.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. The peak stigma receptivity was observed on the third day after anthesis. The stigma receptivity was observed for 5 days in cvs. Francis and Krishna while in cultivars Chakaiya, Kanchan and Neelum for 6 days after anthesis. Shape of pollen grains was prolate. The exine was thin and reticulate with four opertures. No substantial variation in pollen size was observed. The average pollen size under natural dry condition was maximum (22.20 u) in cultivar Chakaiya and minimum (17.57 u) in cultivar Krishna. While under turgid state it was maximum (24.05 u) in cultivar Chakiya and minimum (20.35 u) in cultivar Krishna. The pollen fertility by (1 %) acetocarmine stain test (95.32 %) and differential stain test (91.46 %) was quite high while germination in sugar-agar media was very poor with maximum germination (37.88 %) in 10 per cent sucrose solution combined with 1 per cent agar.|
