Abstract: The present investigation was undertaken during the kharif season of 1989 at Mahatma Phule Agricultural University, Rahuri, with a view to work out optimum plant population and nutritional requirement of newly recommended brinjal cv. Pragati. The experiment was laid out in Factorial RBD with thirty treatment combinations, comprising three spacings (60 x 60, 60 x 75 and 75 x 75 cm) and ten levels of fertilizer doses (150:60:60, 150:60:00, 125:60:60, 125:60:00, 100:50:50, 100:50:00, 100:40:40, 100:40:00, 75:40:40 and 75:40:00 kg NPK/ha). In closer spacing, plant spread, number of main branches, stem diameter and dry matter of leaves, stems and roots were reduced. The days required for last picking were less in closer spacing. The fruit characters such as length, diameter, size and dry matter of fruit were increased in wider spacing. The yield attributes such as number of pickings, number of fruits per plant and yield per plant were reduced in closer spacing. The nutrient uptake was increased in wider spacing. The growth contributing characters such as height, spread and dry weight of plant were influenced by fertilizer, application. The height and spread at last picking, number of main branches, stem diameter and dry matter of leaves, stems and roots were highest from 125:60:60 kg NPK/ha. Fruit size and dry matter of fruit had significant influence of fertilizer application. The highest fruit size and dry matter of fruit were obtained from 125:60:60 kg NPK/ha. The yield of fruits per plant, per plot and per hectare was significantly influenced due to fertilizer application. The highest yield was obtained from 125:60:60 kg NPK/ha, which was at par with 125:60:00 kg NPK/ha. The nutrient status of leaves was significantly influenced due to the fertilizer application. The results obtained in the present investigation indicated that the closest spacing of 60 x 60 cm and fertilizer application of 125:60:00 kg NPK/ha gave better yield with optimum quality of fruits on the soils rich in potassium.
