Title: EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS AND PICKING SEQUENCE ON SEED YIELD AND QUALITY OF BITTER GOURD (Momordica charantia L.) Var. PHULE GREEN GOLD

Abstract: The present investigation on "Effect of growth regulators and picking sequence on seed yield and quality of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) var. Phule Green Gold" was conducted during kharif season, 2000 at the Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomised Block Design with 5 replications. The foliar application of growth regulators with specific concentration was done at (a) first spray at 2 leaf stage and second spray at 4-leaf stage (b) third spray before flowering i.e. 40 days and (c) subsequent four sprays each with 15 days interval after third spray i.e. 55, 70, 85 and 100 DAS. Six pickings of mature fruits under taken. Laboratory tests to assess the quality of seed were carried out in seed testing laboratory. The number of days required to produce 1st male and female flower, node at which first male and female flower appeared, number of female and male flowers per vine, number of days taken to first mature fruit picking from flowering, number at which mature fruits per vine and per plot, average fruit weight, fruit yield per vine and per plot, number of seeds per fruit, seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare, 1000 seed weight, filled seed percentage and germination percentage were significantly influenced by treatment of growth regulators except per cent moisture content and seed vigour index. NAA 50 ppm significantly reduced the days taken to appearance of first female flower, lowered the node number at which first female flower appeared and significantly increased the number of female flowers per vine. Ethephon 50 ppm significantly reduced the days required to first mature fruit picking. NAA 50 ppm produced more number of fruits per vine, per plot and increased seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare. The seed quality characters such as 1000 seed weight, filled seed percentage and germination percentage were significantly increased by MH 100 ppm, NAA 50 ppm and Ethephon 50 ppm respectively. The number of days required to first mature fruit picking from flowering, number of mature fruits per vine and per plot, average fruit weight, fruit yield per vine and per plot, number of seeds per fruit, seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare, 1000 seed weight, filled seed percentage, per cent moisture content, germination percentage and vigour index were significantly influenced by number of fruit pickings. The highest number of seeds per fruit, per cent seed moisture content and seed vigour index were recorded in first picking. The highest seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare, 1000 seed weight, filled seed percentage and germination percentage were recorded in second picking. The maximum number of fruits per vine and per plot, average fruit weight and fruit yield per vine and per plot were recorded in third picking. The interaction effects between growth regulators and number of pickings were significant only in respect of number of seeds per fruit. The mean seed yield was highest with 50 ppm NAA in 2nd picking as compared to other treatments. The seed qualities viz., 1000 seed weight, per cent filled seed and per cent germination were maximum in MH 100 ppm, NAA 50 ppm and Ethephon 50 ppm respectively and the seed quality increased from first picking to second picking and then declined with advancement in picking. However the reduction in seed quality was not below the prescribed standards of seed certification upto second picking. Besides this, higher economic returns were obtained from NAA 50 ppm in 2nd picking.
