Abstract: The present investigation on 'Effect of ethrel and fruit pickings on seed yield and seed quality of cucumber {Cucumis sativus L.) var. Himangi,, was carried out during summer season (1999) at epartment of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri. The experiment was laid out in Randomised Block Design with three replications. The foliar application of ethrel (100 ppm) solution was done at 2-and 4- true leaf stages. Four pickings of edible fruits were carried out with one no picking treatment and the fruits produced after each successive picking were allowed to mature for seed extraction. Laboratory analysis to assess quality of seed was carried out in seed testing laboratory. The appearance of first male and female flower, node number at which first male and female flower ppeared, number of male and female flowers per vine, number of primary and secondary branches per vine, days to seed maturity of fruit, number of seed mature fruits per vine, fruit length, diameter and weight, seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare, filled seed percentage, 1000 seed weight and ermination percentage were significantly influenced by ethrel treatment except seedling vigour index. Ethrel (100 ppm) gave early initiation of female lowers and highest number of female flowers, lowered the node number bearing first female flower, increased the number of primary and secondary branches, reduced days to maturity of fruit, increased number of seed mature fruits per vine. It resulted in increased seed yield per vine, per plot and per hectare. The seed quality characters such as increased filled seed percentage, 1000 seed weight and germination percentage were observed due to ethrel (100 ppm) treatment. The number of primary and secondary branches per vine, days to seed maturity of fruit, number of seed mature fruits, seed yield, filled seed percentage, 1000 seed weight and germination percentage were significantly influenced by a number of edible fruit pickings. The highest number of seed mature fruits per vine, seed number per fruit, seed yield per hectare were recorded in second picking treatment. The maximum fruit weight, length and diameter, 1000 seed weight, filled seed percentage and germination percentage were noticed in no picking treatment followed by first picking treatment. The number of male and female flowers per vine, umber of primary and secondary branches per vine were highest in fourth picking treatment. The interaction effects between ethrel and number of fruit pickings were significant only in respect of number of male flowers per vine and days to seed maturity of fruit. The mean seed yield obtained from second picking along with 100 ppm ethrel treatment was highest of all the treatments with better quality of seed upto the prescribed standards of seed certification. Besides this, higher economic returns were obtained in this treatment from the edible fruits and seed yield obtained.
