|Abstract:||Investigation entitled, "Studies on photoperiodic requirements of Lai Rajgira (Amaranthus caudatus L.) as leafy vegetable" was carried out under controlled conditions at the Instructionalcum-Research Orchard, Department of Horticulture, Mahatma Phule Agricultural University, Rahuri, during 1986-87. It involved five photoperiodic treatments viz., 3-hour, 6-hour, 9-hour, 12-hour and 15—hour photoperiod replicated four times in completely randomised design. The findings revealed that Lai Rajgira is a obligatoryshort-day plant. The vegetative growth interms of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf size, leaf area, and fresh weight and dry weight of plant increased as the photoperiod was increased. Photoperiod of less than 6 hour was found to be insufficient for plant growth. A photoperiod of 12 to 15 hour was found to produce higher edible green matter.Department Major Professor Contd..XV PM CHANDWADE HORTICULTURE ABST. CONTD.• The plants flowered earlier and profusely with 6 and9-hour photoperiods. The 3 and 12-hour photoperiods alsoinduced flowering but it was much less. Photoperiod of15-hours could not induce any flowering and the specieswas found to be obligatory short-day plant. Plants required71.50, 54.75, 58.50 and 66.50 days to commence the floweringin 3, 6, 9 and 12-hour photoperiods respectively. The 9-hour photoperiod was found to be ideal for grain oduction as itgave highest seed yield and the plants had optimum vegetative growth to support the reproductive structure. ,? The leaf composition in terms of Fe, P, K, crude fibre, crude protein, #-carotene and ascorbic acid was found to have some influence of photoperiod. Lai Rajgira was found to bea good source of these nutritionally important components.|
